Born and raised in Flower Mound, Texas, Smart attended Edward S. Marcus High School, where he compiled an impressive 115–6 record over three seasons and won two 5A state championships. He also set a USA Basketball U18 record for steals in a five-game span (18 steals) at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Brazil.
