AN EXPERT revealed the real reason Costco checks your receipt and what the superstore has the right to do if you refuse to show it.
The business owner’s account is known for giving financial tips and tricks.
“This is the real reason Costco checks your receipts,” TikToker Ajla (@ajla_talks) started the video.
She then began to act out a skit between a customer and a Costco employee.
“What are you even looking for? It’s not like I stole anything,” she said as the customer when asked to see their receipt.
“That’s not entirely what we’re looking for. At the bottom of your Costco receipt, there’s a number with the total items you bought. I count and make sure you weren’t under or overcharged,” she said as an employee.
When the customer asks if they have to show their receipt, she says, “Technically, no. All we can do is ask.”
“Legally, you are allowed to refuse the receipt check.”
However, when a customer says no, she claims that Costco has the right to ask for their ID and could revoke their membership.
“We [Costco] are a private business and can make our own rules,” she said as an employee.
“If you don’t follow them, we can kick you out.”
Many customers across both Costco and Walmart have been fuming over receipt checks on the way out.
“It is standard practice at all our warehouse locations to verify purchase receipts when customers exit our buildings,” said Costco on their website.
“We do this to double-check that the items purchased have been correctly processed by our cashiers. It’s our most effective method of maintaining accuracy in inventory control, and it’s also a good way to ensure that our members have been charged properly for their purchases.”
The U.S. Sun previously reported on a woman who thought the process of receipt checking was ridiculous.
“What is kind of dumb about Costco is they don’t even really look,” JoanneMW (@JoanneW2767) wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“They glance at the cart, put a line on the receipt and that’s it.”
“Not really sure what the point is… I could have stuff in my purse for all they know,” she continued.
The U.S. Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.
