According to The Mirror, Holland boss van Gaal left his phone unattended in a hotel toilet in Doha recently.

It was discovered by Dutch football writer Valentijn Driessen who pressed the lock button and quickly saw a picture of van Gaal and his wife Truus as the background image.

The De Telegraaf writer also noted two missed calls from a caller ID named: ‘Manchester United’.

The phone was quickly returned to the former United boss, who was understandably upset that it had fallen into the hands of Driessen.

It’s sparked further suggestions that the Red Devils will make a move for Gakpo in the January window after his scintillating displays for the Netherlands in Qatar.

Gakpo came close to joining Leeds in the summer but now it seems United are the frontrunners and the player himself admitted recently that he could be persuaded into a move to Old Trafford.

Asked about PSV’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and then missing out on a transfer to the Premier League in the summer, Gakpo Dutch newspaper outlet NRC: ‘That was a tough period.

‘I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes. Suppose you want to go from RKC (Waalwijk) to PSV, but that club is not coming. Then you can panic.

‘I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there?’

‘Now I wait for everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.’

The Dutch star will be hoping to continue his impressive scoring form and help fire the Netherlands to their first World Cup final since 2010.

Gakpo scored in all three of Netherlands’ group games against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar and played nearly the full match in their 3-1 win over the USA.

The 23-year-old will be hoping he can get on the scoresheet again when his side take on Argentina in the quarter-finals on Friday evening.
