Australia’s Jack Della Maddalena has surged towards the top five of the welterweight division with an impressive stoppage win over the former title contender Gilbert Burns.

The Next Big Thing of Australian combat sports, 27-year-old Della Maddalena picked up the biggest win of his career at UFC 299 in Florida on Sunday.

It was a closely fought bout until Della Maddalena blasted his Brazilian opponent with a knee to block a takedown attempt during the third round.

‘Jack Della Maddalena is definitely on a championship trajectory, stunning the Miami masses,’ said John Anik in commentary.

Joe Rogan said on commentary: “Wow, what a huge moment from Jack Della Maddalena.

‘It feels good,’ Della Maddalena said afterwards.

‘My plan was come here grab the cash and dash. I knew I hurt him. He’s the man. There’s some scary people in this division but I’m the f**king scariest.

Della Maddalena called out undefeated welterweight boogey man Shavkat Rakhmonov after the bout, hoping they could tangle in a title eliminator with the winner to face champ Leon Edwards.

‘Shavkat Rakhmonov,’ Della Maddalena yelled.

‘I think you and me would make a hell of a title eliminator.’

Della Maddalena said during the week that he’s heard whispers of a Perth card being announced in either August or September and he’s like to feature.

‘I feel like if I beat Rakhmonov, nobody can deny me a shot at that title,’ he told News Corp.

‘That would be prospect versus prospect, with the winner then getting a title shot.’

The Aussie indicated that he’d also like to fight Colby Convington or Ian Garry – two of the divisions biggest names.

‘Look, it would be a dream to fight Colby Covington,’ he said.

‘But as for it happening? I don’t think so, no.

‘I think Colby will go fight someone else, have a terrible performance and then he’ll be gone.’
