King The Land in trouble over culture misinterpretation of Arabs

JTBC’s King The Land featuring Junho from K-Pop boy group 2 PM and YoonA from Girls Generation have been in the news due to bad reasons, earlier it was in the news because of the dating news of leads, some reasons that were good are the kdrama achieved the highest rating of viewership, but again a new controversy has been arised. The drama has revolving itself for its alleged distortion of Arab culture has shown a response from the production team. King The Land in trouble over culture misinterpretation of Arabs.

In the drama, the character Samir, an Arab prince, played by Anupam Tripathi, is one of the world’s wealthiest mans and stays at the King Hotel. At the same hotel, Gu-Won and Cheon Sa Rang work. Some scenes shows Samir in a lavish club revolved by women, while in some scenes he is drinking alcohol and openly flirting with Cheon Sa Rang.

Foreigners did not liked the portrayal of Samir, saying that it showing wrong stereotypes of Arab princes as playboys and that serving alcohol in the presence of a Muslim character was hurtful for them and disrespectful to their religious beliefs. Also, there was controversy revolving around the casting of an Indian actor in the role of an Arab prince, stating a misrepresentation of Arab culture.

King The Land response to the backlash

To responding to the backlash, the production team of King The Land, made their side clear and clarified about the drama that all the setting, characters, regions, and place names in the show are fictional. They stated that there was no intention to disrespect or hurt any specific culture and thier religious beliefs. The team ensured viewers that they respect numerous cultures and would be more careful to make sure that future episodes do not cause any problem or disrespect to anyone.

While the production team’s statement stated the concerns said by viewers, it stays to be seen how the controversy will be solved and whether future changes will be made to the drama by responding to the criticism. As discussions revolving around cultural representation in media to evolve, it is crucial for production teams to be careful of the effect their portrayals may have on numerous communities and to strive for correct and respectful representation.
