In a remarkable performance in the Cricket World Cup 2023, India secured their spot in the semi-finals with a resounding 302-run victory over Sri Lanka. While Mohammed Siraj’s incredible spell initially caught the limelight, it was Mohammed Shami who ultimately guided India to the semi-finals at the Wankhede Stadium. The pace trio, led by Shami, proved relentless, and Sri Lanka’s batters struggled against their prowess. The opening act featured Jasprit Bumrah, who dismissed Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck with a delivery that swung away sharply, striking the pads right in front of the stumps. Nissanka’s review attempt proved unsuccessful.

In the same over, Shami left the Sri Lankan team stunned as he sent Dimuth Karunaratne packing for a golden duck, trapping him in front of the stumps. Sadeera Samarawickrama was the next to fall, offering a thick outside edge that Shreyas Iyer held. Shami continued his rampage by shattering skipper Kusal Mendis’s stumps on the first ball of his second over, celebrating with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siu’ celebration. Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathew tried to repair the innings, but Shami’s introduction disrupted the middle order.

In his first over of the night, Shami claimed two consecutive wickets, dismissing Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha on back-to-back deliveries. He remained eager to take more wickets and hasten India’s victory. Shami’s fourth victim of the night was Angelo Mathews, whose defense was breached, and the bails were clipped. The fast bowler’s relentless performance eventually led to Kasun Rajitha’s departure, claiming his second five-for in the ongoing World Cup.

Ravindra Jadeja secured the final wicket, sealing the game with a dominant 302-run victory for India. Earlier in the innings, Virat Kohli (88), Shreyas Iyer (82), and Shubman Gill (92) dazzled with their performances, propelling India to a commanding total of 357/8. Despite Dilshan Madhushanka’s five-wicket haul for Sri Lanka, India’s batsmen managed to set a formidable target.
