SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a surprising turn of events, Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was involved in a car accident earlier this month. The team officially revealed on Saturday, the day training camp commenced, that his ability to participate at the onset of the camp will be limited due to this incident.
According to a source knowledgeable about the situation, who preferred to remain anonymous, Shanahan endured a concussion, a fractured nose, several broken ribs, and injuries to his hands. This disclosure was shared with The Associated Press.
While the team chose to label the injuries as “non-life-threatening,” they also extended their gratitude to the first responders who acted promptly at the crash site last week.
As the 49ers gear up for their initial practice session on Sunday, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take the reins. He will be supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer to manage the team’s activities.
Shanahan, now stepping into his 10th season as the 49ers’ coach, is widely respected for his offensive expertise. His leadership has steered San Francisco to two Super Bowl appearances after the 2019 and 2023 seasons, as well as two NFC Championship game showings in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, cementing his status as an influential figure in the league.
Shanahan has a 91-72 record in the regular season and playoffs for the 49ers, ranking third in franchise history in wins behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).
The team overcame significant injuries last season to finish 12-5 in the regular season and win a playoff game as Shanahan finished fifth in voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
