NEW CENTURY, Kan. (WDAF) Two people were taken to the hospital after an aircraft crashed at New Century Airport in Johnson County, Kansas, on Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported just before 1:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office said a light twin-engine plane with two people onboard crash-landed on the roof of a hangar.

The sheriff’s office said the two people onboard sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital.

“The good news is the two people that occupied the aircraft sustained minor injuries and were able to exit the aircraft of their own power and down the fire ladder to some paramedics,” said Bryan Johnson, executive director of the Johnson County Airport Commission.

The sheriff’s office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Fire District #1 and MED-ACT were at the scene.

The highway patrol reports that a mechanical malfunction caused the left engine to fail, resulting in the 73-year-old male pilot losing control.

“Witnesses talked about the loud noise, the loud boom it made when it impacted the building,” Johnson said, “but again, [I’m] so relieved that no one was seriously injured.”

Everyone inside the hangar was evacuated, and authorities said no one was injured.

“The hangar that the aircraft landed on was the newest of the two hangars that Butler has…it’s not more than three years old,” Johnson said. “It’s unfortunate, and we’re all relieved that no one was seriously injured or worse.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
