JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating five shootings after a violent start to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The first shooting happened when JSO responded to the downtown Jacksonville area on Thanksgiving Day when a man was shot after a verbal altercation in the parking lot of a plaza.

Two men got into a verbal altercation in front of a food store Thursday on East Union Street around 12:30 p.m., according to police. When one of the men walked away, the other man pulled out a revolver and shot him in the back, JSO said.

The man who was shot was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said it was an isolated incident. It’s unclear what sparked the argument.

believe it was over money but still early in the investigation..

The shooter left the area on foot, JSO said.

Another shooting happened a few hours later on Thursday evening when a man was shot after an argument over the purchase of a vehicle.

Police said just before 6 p.m. two men were arguing over money in a parking lot of the Inn Town Suites Hotel on Beach Boulevard when the seller shot the man in the arm and then drove off in a silver Dodge Durango.

Police said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

These shootings follow three separate shootings that left two people dead on Wednesday night.

Police said a man died after he was found shot in the New Town neighborhood. According to a JSO crime map, in the past four weeks and within a half-mile radius of where the man was found shot, there have been 20 assaults, one of which involved shooting into an occupied building. There was also a murder.

The second deadly shooting happened in the Sunbeam neighborhood when a person was found shot and killed. Police took multiple into custody based on 911 callers’ descriptions. In the past four weeks, there was only one report of violence near that location, according to the crime map.

Also, police said on Wednesday night a man suffering from a gunshot wound was dropped off at the hospital. He told investigators he was shot in the Spring Park area, but police say they didn’t find any evidence related to the man’s shooting.

News4JAX records show last night’s two murders increased Jacksonville’s current murder total to 138. In November 2022, there were 149 murders, according to records.

If you have any information about any of these incidents, call 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
