SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. — Officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources have announced that a ferry has crashed into the Marsh Landing Dock on Sapelo Island.
According to the Georgia DNR, the incident occurred during the early evening of Friday, Nov. 21, when the ferry named Katie Underwood made contact with the gangway. Fortunately, all 41 passengers on board escaped without injuries.
Due to the resulting damage, the Georgia DNR has decided to close the gangway as a safety measure. The U.S. Coast Guard has been informed of the situation. Operations will temporarily relocate to an alternate dock at Marsh Landing, with the ferry Annemarie stepping in to ferry passengers.
This marks the second gangway-related incident on Sapelo Island in a year. Previously, in October 2024, a gangway collapse resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives.
