Cameron Mathison talks latest 'General Hospital' mystery, playing a villain

LOS ANGELES — Cameron Mathison of “General Hospital” has been a working actor for decades.

His 2025 started out rough. Sadly, he lost his home in the Eaton Fire in Southern California. His work has kept him going, and “GH” gave his character Drew a storyline to sink his teeth into.

“It’s been months and months and months in the making. They had to make Drew really despicable!” laughed Mathison.

“General Hospital” has a doozy of a cliffhanger in its storyline, with Mathison’s character Drew Cain getting shot. Expect weeks of a major “who done it?” drama. For those around in 1980, it’s reminiscent of the popular nighttime series, “Dallas.”

“Who shot Drew?” Mathison asked.

“He’s hated in Port Charles, and probably in most of America,” he added. “A good chunk of those people would rather have him not around, and for good reason.”

From Carly, to Sonny, to Michael, to Curtis, to Portia, to Nina… the list goes on!

“There’s just a slew of suspects,” Mathison said. “It is very J.R. Ewing, it is very ‘who shot J.R.-esque?’ I love it, and I love being at the center of it. It’s so fun for me.”

Mathison admitted that, at first, he wasn’t sure about his character becoming such a villain.

“I resisted it a little bit … I didn’t fully understand the transition,” Mathison said. “I think a lot of us didn’t. And then I’d get these scripts, and I was like ‘I can’t believe he’s doing this. This is too much.'”

When asked if he’d rather go back to being the good guy again, Mathison thought for a moment and said, “I kind of like it like this! I have never in my 30-year career… I have been fortunate enough to do a lot of different things in my career.

“I’ve never played a character this dark and this twisted and this much of a jerk ever, and it’s a real opportunity for me, so I’m really trying to embrace it.”

“General Hospital” airs in the afternoons on ABC.
