This consideration comes amidst an investigation into accusations that the president may have unduly influenced the country’s presidential election.
On Wednesday, Gloria Arizabaleta, who serves as the president of Colombia’s Commission of Investigation and Accusation, put forward a motion aimed at suspending President Petro until June 21. This proposal was articulated in a document released by the commission, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against him.
The investigation centers on claims that President Petro participated in political interference during the election campaign. The allegations describe his conduct as “extremely serious or serious,” suggesting significant breaches of electoral integrity.
President Petro, whose term is slated to conclude in August, is accused of playing a role in the campaign of Ivan Cepeda, a leftist candidate aligned with Petro’s Pacto Historico coalition. The accusations have stirred a considerable political storm in Colombia, casting shadows over Petro’s final months in office.
