Senior House Democrats are already preparing to hold prominent members of the Trump administration accountable for decisions made during the past two years.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is widely expected to become the next Speaker of the House, voiced strong support for a resolution introduced by Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie seeking to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during an appearance on ABC’s This Week.
‘I’m a hard yes on the Hegseth resolution,’ Jeffries told anchor Jonathan Karl.
‘The so-called secretary of defense has abused his power, undermined our national security and engineered this reckless and costly war of choice in Iran, which has skyrocketed prices on the American people and made the country less safe,’ Jeffries said.
‘Pete Hegseth has got to go,’ he added.
Jeffries stopped short of promising that the entire Democratic caucus would support the measure, saying he would discuss it with fellow Democrats ‘Tuesday morning.’
California Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, also delivered a sharp critique of the Trump administration during a Sunday morning appearance on CNN.
Garcia labeled the Trump family ‘corrupt’ and promised an aggressive investigation into Stephen Miller, whom Trump recently selected as his new chief of staff.

California Representative Robert Garcia appeared on CNN on Sunday morning, accusing the Trump family of corruption and pledging to investigate them and Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
Garcia told CNN: ‘Donald Trump is the most corrupt person to ever be president of the United States.’
Garcia is expected to become chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He made his intention to scrutinize Trump clear on election night, when he posted the message ‘LAWYER UP’ in all capital letters.
Speaking on CNN, Garcia described Trump and his sons as ‘the most corrupt family to ever be in the Oval Office and the White House. I mean, Donald Trump is the most corrupt person to ever be president of the United States.’
He cited what he characterized as potential conflicts involving the president’s family, saying: ‘You have Don Jr getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Russian oligarch for his wedding. Sitting on boards that are getting contracts from the Pentagon.’
‘You have Jared Kushner getting $2 billion from the Saudis after leaving the White House,’ Garcia added.
Garcia confirmed that he intends to investigate the Trump family, saying: ‘The grift that is happening on the American public, as the Trumps are billions of dollars richer, the American public can’t pay for gas and groceries.’
He also directed his criticism at Miller, who Trump recently announced would replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff.
Garcia accused Miller of being ‘the architect of this horrific, unjust policy happening across the country’ and said he ‘has to be investigated.’

‘Stephen Miller is the architect of this horrific, unjust policy happening across the country,’ Garcia said. ‘Stephen Miller called Alex Pretti, as we know, an assassin.’
Pretti was an American citizen who immigration agents shot ten times in the back while restraining him on the ground during ICE protests in Minneapolis.
Miller described Pretti as a ‘would-be assassin’ and ‘domestic terrorist’ who had ‘tried to murder federal law enforcement.’ After facing widespread backlash and the emergence of video evidence that contradicted those claims, Miller withdrew the comments but did not apologize.
Garcia accused Miller of ‘creating immigration policy that separates families. That is causing people harm. That is creating a detention process where a few large companies are profiting [from] the unconstitutional detention of people.’
‘That has to be investigated,’ Garcia said. ‘And we know that Stephen Miller has been an architect of that.’
‘What’s happening there, what’s happening in Iran. Stephen Miller is at the center of the major policy decisions that are happening in the administration, and so it does deserve oversight and investigation,’ he added.
Since election night, Garcia has maintained a heavy presence on social media, repeatedly promising that a Democratic-led Oversight Committee would examine the Trump administration, the president’s family and their allies.
He has vowed to ‘take on’ the Trump family, major corporations and aggressive immigration enforcement. Garcia has also called for an investigation into what he describes as a ‘White House coverup’ involving the Epstein files.
Garcia won a third term and is expected to become chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Garcia said he wants to investigate ‘Don Jr getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Russian oligarch for his wedding.’ Donald Trump Jr is pictured with his wife.
Garcia also questioned Jared Kushner receiving ‘$2 billion from the Saudis after leaving the White House.’ Kushner is pictured with his wife, Ivanka Trump.
Garcia explained the meaning of this post by saying: ‘When Republicans go low, what we’re not gonna do anymore is just take the high road and turn the other cheek.’
Garcia’s outspoken comments since election night have prompted responses from prominent conservatives and Trump administration officials, including former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
After Garcia issued a statement through the Oversight Committee saying, ‘Stephen Miller should lawyer up,’ Blanche responded on X: ‘The Chief of Staff already has a lawyer. The Attorney General of the United States and the Department of Justice.’
Garcia answered: ‘While we have your attention, when are you coming in to testify under oath about covering up the Epstein files? Or are you too scared to come in?’
During an interview with Lara Trump on Fox News on Saturday night, Leavitt said: ‘You had Rep Garcia’s first statement after election night was “Lawyer up.”‘
‘This is a party whose base is hellbent on political retribution, obstructionism, impeachment – they don’t want to do what’s best for the voters who elected them,’ Leavitt said.
Garcia has occasionally adopted a more playful tone. On his personal X account, he shared an image of the clown from the horror film It peering from a sewer, captioned: ‘When they go low this is me.’
Explaining the post on CNN, Garcia said: ‘This is a joke. I mean, basically what I’m saying is when Republicans go low, what we’re not gonna do anymore is just take the high road and turn the other cheek. We’re gonna get down and be in that fight.’
