DENVER (KDVR) The Denver City Council approved a bill that would change what drinks are offered as a first choice with kids meals across the city.

The measure will require water or unflavored milk and milk substitutes (almond and oat milk) to be listed as the free option in a kids meal.

The main sponsors of the bill are Councilmember Chris Hinds and Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez.

Restaurants won’t be required to get rid of sugary drinks like soda and juice, they just won’t offer it as the “free” option to be bundled in with a kids meal.

Here is an example of what a menu before and after would look like, per the sponsors.

According to Robert Austin with the City and County of Denver, the “sugary drink” measure passed as part of the council’s consent agenda, which passed a bunch of things together. It was a unanimous vote.
