A dermatologist has divulged how you can clear up your skin by simply changing the way that you wash your face.

The guidance was shared on TikTok by New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss, who is the founder of skincare label PillowtalkDerm

She often takes to her social media pages to explain more about skin health and share her extensive tips.

In a recent clip, which was posted this week, Dr. Idriss offered three tips that she says everyone should be using in your face cleansing routine to guarantee clear, blemish-free skin.

Clear skin through cleansing, according to Dr. Idriss

  • Don’t skip washing your face at night
  • Don’t ‘skimp’ on washing your face
  • Don’t wash your face in the morning

‘Number one, don’t skip washing your face at night,’ Dr. Idriss began. ‘Because you have all this crap on your face, and you’ve walked through the day and your face has taken a beating.’

‘If you don’t treat your face with the love and respect that it deserves, no one will,’ she went on, comparing skincare neglect to buying an Aston Martin and not taking it to get serviced.

‘That’s literally what you’re doing by not washing your face at night,’ the board-certified dermatologist warned.

Next up on the list of tips was to make sure you’re actually washing your face properly at night.

‘Number two, if you’re gonna take the time and make the effort to actually wash your face at night, do it right,’ Dr. Idriss instructed. ‘Don’t just skimp on how you do it.’

‘If you wear makeup and if you know that you have a cleanser that fully takes off your makeup, then great, but chances are you haven’t met that cleanser yet, because I haven’t met that cleanser yet.’

She advised viewers to use a micellar water or a makeup remover that is oil-based to take off makeup, followed by cleanser.

In order to make sure all of your makeup has been properly removed from your face, Dr. Idriss recommended trying something called ‘the white towel test.’

‘After you’ve washed, you get yourself a clean, white towel, and if she’s clear, you know you did it right,’ she explained.

And, last but not least, Dr. Idriss warned against cleansing your face in the morning, upon waking up.

‘Now, before you guys come at me in the comments section, I’m not saying don’t clean your face with water in the morning,’ the dermatologist explained.

‘But you do not need to be using a cleanser in the morning after you’ve cleansed your face at night.’

Dr. Idriss dished that if you cleanse in the morning, you may actually be ‘over stripping’ your skin of its natural oils.

‘There are obviously exceptions to this rule, but for most people, this works great,’ she said.

It’s a rule that she says her patients have enjoyed.

‘And tons of my own patients have told me that this specific tip has been a game-changer for their skin, when they skip the A.M. cleanser,’ the dermatologist said.

‘So, don’t neglect your face, your money maker, but not washing it at night,’ she concluded.

In the comments section of her post, many users claimed that this practice has helped their skin.

‘Skipping the AM cleanser definitely is a game changer!! Loveeeeee,’ one person wrote.

Another agreed, ‘Ever since I double cleanse at night and only water wash my face in the AM my skin improved a lot.’

‘Yes yes! I thought I had super oily skin due to me over cleansing! finally stopped cleansing it in the morning and my skin is soo much healthier,’ someone else typed.

Others, on the other hand, seemed a bit skeptical of the change in routine.

‘My oily skin needs a cleansing in AM, or else, with sunscreen its gonna be slippery oily mess,’ one user admitted.

Another seconded, ‘I’m extremely oily though, in the morning I look like melted butter, so I always feel like I need to wash my face.’
