Detainee Dies After Medical Episode in Custody at NYPD Precinct

A man arrested by the NYPD on drug charges died one day after suffering a medical emergency while in custody at a Brooklyn precinct, police said.

Reginald Newkirk, 54, was being held at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush as he waited to be taken to criminal court for arraignment when his condition suddenly worsened, according to the NYPD.

Paramedics transported Newkirk, a Brooklyn resident, to a nearby hospital shortly before 2:15 p.m. Saturday after he became ill, police said. The nature of the illness was not disclosed.

Newkirk remained hospitalized overnight and was pronounced dead Sunday, according to police. The cause of death has not been determined.

Court records show that Newkirk had been arrested Friday and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The death comes after a 46-year-old detainee died on Sept. 9 following a medical episode inside the Central Courts Building in Downtown Brooklyn, AMNY reported.
