HOUSTON — In a remarkable display of dedication, a DoorDash driver in Texas continued with a food delivery even after a harrowing incident, where she was hit by a car. Her unwavering commitment earned her a noteworthy five-star review.
An exclusive video shared with ABC13 Eyewitness News, a Houston-based station, captures the dramatic moment. The footage shows the dedicated DoorDash driver just moments before her delivery when a grey sedan, involved in a high-speed pursuit by Houston Police, collided with her.
Lily Portillo, who witnessed the scene and whose security cameras recorded the incident, explained, “I was on the phone with my husband and then heard an enormous crash. There was a lot of shouting from the police, and when I stepped out, I saw the police parked on my mulch. It was quite chaotic!”
The driver of the grey sedan was identified by authorities as Torrance Whitaker. Following the collision, Whitaker attempted to evade capture by fleeing on foot, choosing to hide in the backyards of homes in the Greenspoint area.
Steve Jones, a neighbor whose property was also canvassed by Whitaker, recounted the scene from his own surveillance cameras. “I saw someone climbing over my fence and sprinting through my yard,” Jones described, adding that soon after, Houston Police along with a K-9 unit followed in hot pursuit.
“He went through two more yards, and came out two more houses down the front yard bushes, and the dog brought him out. And I thought it was Live PD!”
A police K-9 eventually grabs Whitaker, and he is arrested, video shows.
Meanwhile, the DoorDash delivery driver is seen taking a moment to recover, then carrying the food to the doorstep of the house where she parked.
“It’s amazing how the girl just delivered the food. I asked her if she was okay, and she said she was okay,” said Portillo. “She needs a big tip. I really hope somebody finds her and hope she’s okay.”
Court documents show Whitaker, 34, was wanted for burglary and was fleeing from police after an attempted traffic stop in the 13000 block of Northborough Drive.
According to court documents, Whitaker was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the collision with the delivery driver.
Eyewitness News spoke with the driver, who did not want to be identified, who said she’s in a lot of pain, but thankfully has no broken bones. She confirmed she was working as a DoorDash driver at the time of the incident and said she is looking into filing a claim against Whitaker’s car insurer.
