In the hustle and bustle of everyday gym-goers heading straight for cardio machines to torch calories or reaching for free weights to build muscle, it’s easy to overlook another crucial aspect of fitness: balance exercises. While cardio and strength training are undeniably important in any workout regime, it’s time to give balance training the attention it truly merits.

Balance is a multifaceted component of fitness that often goes unnoticed, as Jacob Siwicki, an accomplished fitness expert and certified coach, keenly points out. “Balance isn’t one thing; it’s your strength, your proprioception—basically your body’s sense of where it is without looking—your coordination, your vision, and your inner ear all working simultaneously,” explains Siwicki, who has an impressive background including a stint as a globally top-ranked Equinox group instructor and recognition as the #1 personal trainer in D.C. in 2021.

Siwicki shares insights into five daily exercises that can boost your balance more effectively than Tai Chi after age 60.

He emphasizes that these exercises engage multiple facets of balance. For those looking to add a challenge, Siwicki suggests, “Want to make single-leg stands way harder? Close your eyes. That takes your vision out of it and forces the inner ear and proprioception to do the work, and honestly, that’s where I see people improve the fastest.”

Now, let’s get started.

Single-Leg Stand

  1. Stand tall on a flat surface with your feet hip-width apart and arms at your sides.
  2. Shift your body weight onto your left foot.
  3. Lift your right foot off the ground.
  4. Activate your core while keeping your shoulders stacked over your ribs and your hips level.
  5. The time begins once your leg comes off the floor and stops when your foot touches the ground.
  6. Hold the single-leg balance with your eyes closed for 1 minute.
  7. Repeat on the other side.

Heel-to-Toe Walk

  1. Stand tall.
  2. Begin walking straight, placing one foot right in front of the other, heel to toe.

  5. Return your foot to the center after each reach.
