BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham businesses said they are like the Drake song “In My Feelings” because they were anticipating his concert would bring them a lot of revenue.
Kristal Bryant, owner of K & J’s Elegant Pastries in Uptown, said she was disappointed to learn Drake is no longer coming to Birmingham on March 27.
“I, myself, was looking forward to actually attending,” Bryant said. “I had actually talked to the BJCC about making him a custom cake.”
Bryant said she and other businesses in Uptown benefit when popular artists perform in Birmingham.
“We kind of thrive off of those events,” Bryant said. “Like Journey just had a concert a couple of weeks back, and that was a busy day for us. So we definitely see a rise in revenue on those days.”
Emmett Starks, general manager of Eugene’s Hot Chicken in Uptown, said Eugene’s made preparations for four months for the concert. He wants an explanation of why Drake canceled.
“No one can say really why he canceled,” Starks said. “He hasn’t said anything. He hasn’t posted anything. He hasn’t sent any apology.”
Tad Snider, executive director of the BJCC, gave this response to Drake canceling his tour date.
“The only thing we can say is Drake did not cancel in Birmingham, but it was several date cities that were affected,” Snider said. “That’s all we’re able to talk about.”
Snider said the concert was one of many concerts and event that were sold out at the BJCC in March. He said even though the concert being canceled was disappointing, it’s not a setback for the BJCC.
“It certainly isn’t indicative to a broader problem — you look at the lineup really through the month of April,” Snider said. “But it’s just cycle, and next year and this fall is another strong season.”
Snider said that it’s up to the promoter if the concert will be rescheduled. Those who did purchase tickets will receive a refund through Ticketmaster.
