In San Luis Obispo County, citizens are being incentivized with cash rewards to aid in cracking down on illegal fireworks sellers as the Fourth of July approaches.
On Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office revealed its collaboration with SLO County Crime Stoppers, aiming to intensify efforts to curb the distribution and use of unlawful fireworks throughout the area.
Through this initiative, locals have the opportunity to receive up to $500 in rewards for providing information that assists authorities in locating individuals who possess or sell illegal fireworks, as enforcement measures are heightened for the upcoming festivities.
“Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for tips leading to the identification and arrest of those found in possession of illegal fireworks with the intent to distribute them,” the county sheriff’s office detailed.
The statement additionally emphasized that “illegal fireworks present a grave risk to public safety, potentially causing fires, injuries, property damage, and severe distress for pets, livestock, veterans, and others sensitive to loud noises.”
The crackdown comes after illegal fireworks sparked a blaze that destroyed the historic Templeton Feed & Grain store during last year’s Fourth of July celebrations.
Prosecutors later charged an adult man and a 16-year-old boy, alleging the pair drove to Bakersfield to buy the illegal fireworks before bringing them back to San Luis Obispo County.
In July 2025, a massive explosion ripped through a 5,000-square-foot fireworks warehouse in Yolo County. Seven workers were killed, two others were injured and the blast ignited a 78-acre wildfire after authorities said large quantities of unregulated fireworks had been stockpiled at the site.
