Actor James Van Der Beek, known for his role in “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at the age of 48, as confirmed by his wife on Wednesday.
Van Der Beek received a diagnosis of Stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023 and revealed his condition publicly in November 2024. The news of his passing was shared by his wife on Instagram.
“This morning, our cherished James David Van Der Beek left us peacefully,” wrote Kimberly Van Der Beek on Instagram. “He faced his final days with bravery, faith, and dignity. There is much to share about his desires, his love for humanity, and the preciousness of time. Those stories will come. For now, we kindly ask for privacy as we mourn our dear husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

The “Dawson’s Creek” actor announced his cancer diagnosis in 2024.
“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” Van Der Beek had said at the time.
Last November, the actor auctioned off items from “Dawson’s Creek” and “Varsity Blues” to help pay for his medical bills.
Among the items auctioned was the necklace Van Der Beek’s character Dawson gave Joey, played by Katie Holmes, for prom, estimated to fetch between $26,400 and $52,800, according to Deadline. His outfit from the 1998 “Dawson’s Creek” pilot is expected to sell for nearly $4,000.
From “Varsity Blues,” the 1999 football film, Van Der Beek auctioned his West Canaan Coyotes hat and black and white Reebok cleats. The estimated value of all items ranges from $1,320 to $52,800.
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and his six kids.
