KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) The Kalamazoo City Commission honored the police K-9 who stabbed while subduing a suspect last month.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess read the proclamation as Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officer Max Houtman brought K-9 Sledge into the city commission chambers.
Sledge was stabbed in his jugular with a box cutter while responding to a call on West Kalamazoo Avenue in the city’s Stewart neighborhood on Feb. 6. The K-9 was rushed to Byron Center Animal Emergency and Specialty Center, where the wounds were closed. Sledge left the hospital later the next morning.
“Also, I want to recognize those officers who made sure that we did not lose K-9 Sledge that evening. It was very, very touch and go, and I know there was a great deal of concern about that, but with their quick work, it’s amazing to me K-9 Sledge was back working 10 days later. That seems like a miracle,” said Mayor David Anderson.
Sledge is expected to fully recover from the wounds he suffered that night.
