Kevin Bacon recently became emotional as he discussed the tragic loss of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, who were both victims of a double homicide over the weekend.
The 67-year-old star of “Footloose” took to Instagram on Monday to pay an emotional tribute to Reiner, recalling their strong professional and personal bond. Reiner had directed Bacon in the iconic 1992 courtroom drama “A Few Good Men.”
“I’m struggling to find the right words, but Rob Reiner gave me a role in ‘A Few Good Men,'” Bacon shared. “It must have been sometime in the ’90s, and I was thrilled to get that job because, as some might know, ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ is my favorite movie of all time.”
Reiner not only directed but also starred in the 1984 mockumentary, which has since gained a cult following.
Bacon expressed that while the connection through Reiner’s work was memorable, it was Reiner’s exceptional leadership on set that truly left an enduring impact on him.
‘When he called me, I was just so thrilled,’ Bacon continued, adding that working on the film became one of the most meaningful experiences of his career. ‘On the set, he was so fun. And it really comes down from the top. You can set a tone where people feel like we are working hard, but also we are working hard in a safe and pleasant and fun situation.’
Kevin Bacon broke down in tears as he reflected on the devastating loss of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Reiner’s wife, Michele, following their brutal deaths
A Few Good Men featured an all-star cast including Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Jack Nicholson, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Pollak, and went on to receive four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Bacon said his bond with Reiner extended beyond the camera, describing daily lunches shared with the director and his wife during filming, which something he said he had never experienced before or since.
‘We had lunch together every day,’ Bacon recalled. ‘He and Michele would be there, and the two of them were so great together. Kyra would come by. She was pregnant with Travis. It was a magical time.’
He concluded his tribute by offering support to others mourning the loss.
‘So I’m just sending love to everyone who knew him today, because I know that everyone’s hurting today.’
Moore, who portrayed Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway in the film, also paid tribute in a separate Instagram post, describing the couple’s impact on her life both personally and professionally.
‘There are no words to truly express the unfathomable devastation of losing Rob and Michelle Reiner,’ she wrote. ‘Our kids grew up together, we worked together, and as our lives intertwined personally and professionally I will always cherish the moments and memories of what we shared.’
She added that Reiner and his wife ‘were amazing people and wonderful parents who gave of themselves to make the world a better place,’ before offering her condolences to their loved ones.
The Footloose star, 67, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram on Monday, recalling his close professional and personal connection to Reiner, who directed him in the 1992 courtroom drama A Few Good Men
Moore shares three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, with her ex-husband Bruce Willis.
Rob and Michele Reiner were parents to three children together: sons Jake and Nick, and daughter Romy.
Reiner also adopted daughter Tracy during his marriage to Penny Marshall.
Alongside her post, Moore shared a throwback image from the set of A Few Good Men featuring herself, Reiner, Cruise and Bacon, as well as a photo of Rob and Michele at the 1989 premiere of When Harry Met Sally.
Kiefer Sutherland, who also appeared in A Few Good Men, issued a statement remembering Reiner as a mentor who helped shape his early career.
‘Like so many, my heart was broken today when I heard the news about Rob Reiner and his wonderful wife, Michele,’ Sutherland said. ‘Rob was one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with… he gave me an opportunity that changed my life, and I will forever be grateful.’
‘I’m not sure how to do this, but Rob Reiner gave me a job in A Few Good Men,’ Bacon wrote. ‘Sometime in the ’90s, I guess it was, and I was over the moon to get that job’
Authorities have confirmed that Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered deceased by their daughter, Romy.
Their son Nick has since been arrested and is facing federal murder charges. He is currently being held without bail. Police have not released further details about the investigation.
According to reports, Romy had previously told law enforcement that a family member ‘should be a suspect,’ describing that individual as ‘dangerous.’
The arrest reportedly came after an incident at a holiday party attended by the family, where witnesses alleged that Nick was involved in a heated confrontation.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about longstanding struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues.
In past interviews, he described repeated stints in rehabilitation and periods of homelessness after refusing treatment.
In a 2016 interview with People, he said, ‘I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.’

Years earlier, Rob and Michele Reiner had acknowledged regrets over how they handled their son’s addiction, saying they placed too much trust in professionals rather than listening directly to him.
‘When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen,’ Reiner told the Los Angeles Times at the time. Michele added that they were repeatedly warned their son was being manipulative, something they later questioned.
After Nick became sober, he and his father collaborated on the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which explored addiction and its toll on families.
Reiner said the project allowed him to apologize, both on screen and in real life, for mistakes he made as a parent.
Following the deaths, the Reiner family released a statement requesting privacy.
‘It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,’ the family said. ‘We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.’
The couple were last photographed together with their family in September at the premiere of Spinal Tap 2, which Reiner directed and co-wrote – a project that would ultimately become one of his final public appearances.
