(NewsNation) — After announcing last week that its president is on paid leave, Lincoln University of Missouri, a historically black college, said Thursday a group of attorneys at the Higher Education Practice Group of Lewis Rice will conduct a review.

Lincoln University’s board of curators said the group, led by Ronald Norwood and Jerina Phillips, will look into “recent issues raised regarding compliance with the University’s established policies and procedures.”

This comes after the death by suicide of Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey in early January. Family sources told HBCU Buzz she had suffered “bullying and severe mistreatment” from Lincoln University President John Moseley, which spurred calls for his resignation. Students and alums rallied on social media, using #FireMoseley.

The university’s board of curators said Moseley volunteered to be put on leave during a third-party review.

In a news release Thursday, the board of curators said they selected Lewis Rice to lead this investigation after reviewing proposals from other “qualified firms.” The release said it is set to begin this week.

“The review will examine Lincoln University’s management of personnel issues and address any relevant concerns associated with the allegations of Dr. Antoinette ‘Bonnie’ Candia-Bailey,” the news release said.

Board of curators President Victor Pasley said in a statement that they are focused on having an “independent expert” examine the facts so it can take appropriate steps.

“As a University community, we want to prioritize the mental health of everyone here and make sure each employee and student is treated with dignity and respect,” Pasley said.

If you or a loved one are experiencing mental distress, please call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
