While dating apps were once seen as taboo, they’re now one of the main ways that singletons find love around the world.

And if you’re dipping your toe into the dating scene this new year, make sure you get yourself online later this week.

The busiest day of the year for dating apps will fall on Sunday 7 January, according to Tinder.

Based on last year’s figures, Tinder says that the number of messages sent globally will be 22 per cent higher than usual, while the number of ‘Likes’ will be 18.2 per cent higher.

‘There couldn’t be a better time to put yourself out there with “peak dating season” on the horizon,’ Tinder said.

January is ‘peak dating season’ on dating apps, with a whopping 11.4 million more messages sent globally on Tinder from January 1 – February 14 compared to the rest of the year.

During this period, it seems that many singletons also take the opportunity to spruce up their profile, with 2,263 pictures added every minute.

The ultimate surge comes on the first Sunday in January, often known as ‘Dating Sunday’.

Data from Tinder suggests that on this day, users respond on average 19.4 minutes faster than on other Sundays of the year.

The news will likely be welcomed by many singletons, who have expressed their interest in dating this new year.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote: ‘In 2024 i want to get back on tinder so im adding it to my new year’s resolution.’

Another added: ‘New Year’s resolution: Find a stable partner so I can finally delete my dating apps for good.’

And one joked: ‘My New Year’s resolution is start back dating again, but then again I said that for the last two new years and didn’t do it, so let’s see how long this last.’

If you’re hoping to get your Tinder profile in shape ahead of Dating Sunday, Tinder’s Global Relationship Insights Expert, Paul C. Brunson, has five top tips.

1. Show the real you

Mr Brunson recommends having at least five photos that capture your true personality in different scenarios.

‘People want to see you for who you are and authenticity is important above all else to young singles,’ he said.

2. More words, more possibilities

The optimal amount of words in a Tinder bio is between 15 and 45, according to Tinder.

‘It is important to make these 15-45 words count as research from Tinder shows that more than two in five (45%) of single 18-24 year olds prefer when their potential match is clear about what they want in their dating app bio,’ Mr Brunson said.

3. Showcase your interests

Showcasing your interests can help potential matches to quickly find common ground with you.

‘Your interests are what make you, you and by sharing them you’ll be more likely to meet people who match your energy,’ Mr Brunson advised.

4. Express your personality

Instead of sending a generic ‘Hey, how are you?’, Mr Brunson suggests getting creative and personal with your messages.

‘Ask questions you really want to know the answer to, or light a spark with asking your match about their favourite place to rave, or the name of their pet. You never know what you might learn…’ he said.

5. Be open about what youire looking for

Finally, Mr Brunson advises being clear with your intentions from the word go.

‘Being straightforward and honest about what you are looking for from a match will go a long way,’ he concluded.

The first ever incarnation of a dating app can be traced back to 1995 when Match.com was first launched.

The website allowed single people to upload a profile, a picture and chat to people online.

The app was intended to allow people looking for long-term relationships to meet.

eHarmony was developed in 2000 and two years later Ashley Madison, a site dedicated to infidelity and cheating, was first launched.

A plethora of other dating sites with a unique target demographic were set up in the next 10-15 years including: OKCupid (2004), Plenty of Fish (2006), Grindr (2009) and Happn (2013).

In 2012, Tinder was launched and was the first ‘swipe’ based dating platform.

After its initial launch it’s usage snowballed and by March 2014 there were one billion matches a day, worldwide.

In 2014, co-founder of Tinder, Whitney Wolfe Herd launched Bumble, a dating app that empowered women by only allowing females to send the first message.

The popularity of mobile dating apps such as Tinder, Badoo and more recently Bumble is attributable to a growing amount of younger users with a busy schedule.

In the 1990s, there was a stigma attached to online dating as it was considered a last-ditch and desperate attempt to find love.

This belief has dissipated and now around one third of marriages are between couples who met online.

A survey from 2014 found that 84 per cent of dating app users were using online dating services to look for a romantic relationship.

Twenty-four per cent stated that that they used online dating apps explicitly for sexual encounters.
