CHICAGO A man accused of fatally shooting a pregnant woman whose premature child later died is now facing felony charges.
Chicago police said 42-year-old Robert Pasco III has been charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter involving a family member, one felony count of causing death or endangerment to a child, and three misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.
The charges stem from Pasco’s alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Edith Castrejon, who was pregnant at the time, on Thursday, Jan. 16, in the 5800 block of West Newport.
Authorities said Castrejon was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
Castrejon’s baby boy was delivered prematurely and survived for seven days before he died of “complications of prematurity.”
According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors said Castrejon and Pasco were sleeping in the same room with three small children when Castrejon reached over and grabbed a gun under Pasco’s pillow, which allegedly caused him to wake up and fatally shoot her in the chest.
Pasco was taken into custody on Monday and will appear in court for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
