Foul tip to groin has Mets' Luis Torrens mulling equipment change

Luis Torrens is considering an equipment change behind the plate following his removal from Sunday’s game after taking a foul tip to the groin area.

The Mets catcher was wearing a protective plastic cup, but said he may need something stronger after absorbing so many foul tips over the years.

Torrens shared with The Post after the Mets beat the Cubs 6-2 at Citi Field that he was considering whether he needed to wear an additional cup or explore alternatives like platinum or metal.

Kyle Tucker’s foul tip left Torrens in severe discomfort.

Play was halted for a few minutes before he walked off the field and was replaced by Francisco Alvarez.

“I have taken a lot of foul tips there,” Torrens said, referring to his groin area. “So it’s getting really sensitive after so many. … I can handle getting hit by a pitch, but this is different.”

Torrens’ RBI triple in the second inning accounted for the Mets’ first run.

Juan Soto, who finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, slammed his bat in disgust after whiffing to begin the sixth inning.

“It’s just part of the game,” he said. “Sometimes, you get a little frustrated when you’re trying to do too much, but we’ll leave that in the past and try to move forward.”

Soto homered three times in two games beginning on Wednesday before going 0-for-9 over the final two games against the Cubs.

“I feel pretty good,” Soto said. “I think I am in a great spot. I have got to still keep working on getting better. I am trying to figure out my swing. These last two games I tried to do too much.”

Ryne Stanek struck out two of the three batters he faced in a scoreless eighth inning, continuing his recent hot streak after suffering consecutive blown saves in late April.

The right-hander hasn’t allowed an earned run in his past five appearances. It’s a stretch of five innings in which he’s allowed only one hit with five strikeouts.

The Mets are 15-4 at Citi Field — tying the franchise mark for best start at home over 19 games. It matches the home starts by the 1972, 1985 and 2015 teams.
