Missing Girl Recovered 1,500 Miles Away in Infamous ‘The Jungle’ Homeless Camp

A long and often desperate search ended last week when a missing girl from Arizona, suspected to have fallen victim to sex trafficking, was discovered nearly 1,500 miles from home in a notorious Washington encampment. This dramatic rescue was reported by the US Marshals.

The investigation launched following a tip received on June 18, relayed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It highlighted that the girl was last seen in Olympia, Washington, and raised concerns that she might be involved in sex trafficking, as reported by KING 5.

Authorities zeroed in on “The Jungle,” a sprawling 20-acre homeless encampment in Olympia. Armed with detailed information, they were able to refine their search within this precarious area.

This location, notorious for its criminal activities and violence, has a dark history. Back in 2023, KOMO News covered a grim story of a 37-year-old woman who went missing; her remains were tragically discovered in a suitcase within The Jungle.

According to city officials cited by KOMO, The Jungle is home to between 100 to 250 individuals. These numbers are fluid, as people frequently move in and out throughout the year.

The child, who was reported missing from Mesa, Arizona, was found on Thursday after authorities scoured the compound that is filled with trash and debris. 

“Protecting our nation’s children is of the highest importance,” said Donrien Stephens, acting US Marshal for the Western District of Washington, according to the outlet. “The excellent investigative efforts, collaboration, and persistence of our local, state, and community partners led to the safe recovery of a youth with an elevated risk of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.”

It’s not clear how the girl went missing and no arrests have been made, according to The Olympian.

The child is now in the custody of the Olympia Police Department and the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families.
