A six-pack of thoughts on this young (very young) season:
1. Let me start by admitting a mistake I made during the 2025 campaign. I failed to grasp why the Yankees decided to offer Trent Grisham a contract for this season.
It wasn’t solely because of his poor performance in 2024, where he averaged .190 with a 91 OPS-plus. It wasn’t just his nonchalant demeanor, which clashed with a team struggling with focus and precision. It wasn’t only his left-handedness at a time when the Yankees heavily favored lefties and needed more right-handed balance and depth. It wasn’t just the $5 million price tag, a significant amount when Hal Steinbrenner was pushing for financial restraint to address other roster needs.
It was the combination of all these factors that made bringing back Grisham seem like an ill-advised move. And with approximately 24 weeks remaining in the season, this assessment may prove to be correct. However, part of assessing value lies in evaluating its timeliness.
