Red Bulls in talks to bring in German international Timo Werner

The Red Bulls have been in talks to bring over German international Timo Werner to New York from RB Leipzig, according to multiple reports.

A deal has not been reached between the two sides, but there appears to be optimism that an agreement will come together to bring Werner to MLS.

The German winger has been on the Red Bulls’ radar for some time and even had the option of joining the team last summer, The Athletic reported.

Discussions about acquiring Werner have been ongoing for a while, according to the report. This potential move would reunite the 29-year-old forward with his former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg, who transferred to the Red Bulls last year.

During the last 18 months, Werner was on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where his playing time gradually decreased. He played a crucial role in helping Leipzig secure the DFB-Pokal title in 2023, which was the club’s first major trophy.

Werner initially joined Leipzig in 2016 after transferring from Stuttgart. He had a successful spell at Leipzig, scoring 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga appearances before making a switch to Chelsea in the Premier League in 2020. Werner was part of Chelsea’s squad that clinched the Champions League title in 2021.

He returned to Leipzig in 2022 and moved to Tottenham on loan at the start of the 2024 calendar year.

While Werner has seen a bit of a fall from grace, he would be a big addition for a Red Bulls team that’s sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference and has seen several players leave their latest match due to injuries.

He could be a solid piece up front with Forsberg and star Lewis Morgan, who suffered an injury in the Red Bulls’ draw with Toronto on Wednesday night.

The Red Bulls are coming off a run to the MLS Cup, which ended with a loss to the LA Galaxy, and an active offseason that saw them bring in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has been one of the top scorers in the league.

Werner is not the only player the Red Bulls are in talks with.

The team has been in advanced talks with Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren, amNewYork reported earlier this week.
