Eleven years after celebrating his birthday with father Rob Reiner on a red carpet, Nick Reiner faces a dramatically different milestone. He is expected to spend this year’s birthday in jail while accused of killing the acclaimed filmmaker and his mother, Michele Reiner.
Nick Reiner, who turns 33 on Monday, is being held without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility. His first birthday in custody will follow the same routine as any other day, according to authorities.
“Birthdays are treated like every other day, no special treatment from LASD,” a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told Page Six in response to a public records request.
In practical terms, Reiner will not receive extra accommodations or privileges for the occasion.
“Inmates have access to telephones in accordance to Module schedules and visits (both in person or video),” the representative said, adding, “There are no additional privileges for birthdays.”
Anyone wishing to send Reiner birthday greetings will need to rely on the facility’s standard mail process and schedule.
“Inmates can still receive mail through normal channels and mail is inspected for any contraband before being given to the inmate,” the spokesperson told Page Six.
“If there was anything birthday related, the onus would be on the inmate’s family/friends/network to time the mail for it to arrive on the normal mail schedule.”
Reiner could, however, have the opportunity to receive a visitor on his 33rd birthday.
“According to this schedule, Sept. 14 will be a normal visiting day and no additional privileges are given for birthdays,” the representative said.
As for any birthday snacks, LASD provided Page Six with its current commissary list, which includes snacks, candy, desserts and beverages available for purchase.

Nick could have access to an array of sweet treats, including Dolly Madison chocolate cupcakes for $1.85, Banana Deluxe Moon Pies for $1.66, chocolate chip cookies for $3.04 and Mascots mini peanut butter cups for $4.85.
It’s a far cry from how Nick marked his birthday 11 years ago.
In September 2015, Nick celebrated his 22nd birthday walking the red carpet alongside Rob for the premiere of “Being Charlie” at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The father-son outing came as they promoted the semi-autobiographical film, which Rob directed and Nick co-wrote with Matt Elisofon, drawing inspiration from Nick’s own struggles with drug addiction and stints in rehab.
Nick and Rob smiled and posed together for photographers at the festival, with Nick even receiving a birthday cake while promoting the film.
Eleven years later, Nick will spend his birthday in custody, charged with killing both Rob and Michele at their Brentwood, Calif., home.
The 78-year-old filmmaker and his 70-year-old wife were found stabbed to death inside their home on Dec. 14, 2025.
Nick was arrested later that day and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances of multiple murders and personal use of a knife.
Nick — who got into an argument with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s Dec. 13 Christmas party — had been diagnosed with schizophrenia before the killings and has a long history of drug addiction.
Nick’s brother Jake, 35, and his sister, Romy, 28, have not spoken to him since his arrest.
He has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court Tuesday, one day after his birthday, for a pretrial conference.
