A cargo ship erupted in flames at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro on Friday, prompting a swift evacuation of its crew. Officials have labeled the incident a significant emergency.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that all 23 crew members were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries. The fire was detected across multiple levels of the vessel.

Authorities have noted the presence of hazardous materials in the affected bays, and specialized hazmat teams are closely monitoring the air quality to prevent any potential risks.

At approximately 8 p.m., an explosion occurred mid-deck, disrupting power and affecting both lighting and crane operations on the ship, compounding the challenges faced by emergency responders.

“First responders are actively responding to a fire on a container ship at the Port of Los Angeles,” Mayor Karen Bass wrote on X. “LAFD continues fire-suppression efforts and is monitoring air quality. “
