Realtors' phones ringing off hook as panicked New Yorkers flee Mamdani

In the wake of Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral win, real estate agents are inundated with calls from anxious New Yorkers eager to escape the city. The urgency to relocate has reached a fever pitch this morning.

Two prime relocation areas are quickly gaining popularity: suburban neighborhoods surrounding New York City and the Republican-leaning regions of the Sunbelt.

Real estate professionals from places like Westchester and Greenwich, as well as in Florida, Texas, and the Carolinas, report a noticeable uptick in inquiries. Some city dwellers are searching for homes within commuting distance, while others are prepared to leave urban life behind entirely.

Dina Goldentayer, a Douglas Elliman agent based in Florida, shared with the Daily Mail, “Interest from New York City is surging post-election. We’re seeing area codes 917 and 212 as frequently now as we did at the pandemic’s peak.”

Most inquiries are from prospective buyers, including many high-ranking Wall Street executives, with budgets ranging from $20 million to $30 million. They are particularly interested in properties with breathtaking waterfront views or luxurious oceanfront condominiums.

Goldentayer — who said she’s being asked to look mainly in Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Golden Beach, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables — noted that 212 remains the original Manhattan area code, long considered a status symbol among established New Yorkers.

‘This election has reminded people that where you live matters — politically, financially and personally,’ said Christie Di Lemme, another Florida realtor, who described the post-election exodus of executives and investors as ‘already underway.’

‘Florida offers freedom, opportunity, and stability that professionals are craving right now.’

Meanwhile, Christie Di Lemme, another Florida realtor said the post-election exodus of executives and investors is already underway.

Nearly one million New Yorkers are prepping to flee the city after Mamdani’s win, said a survey conducted by JL Partners for the Daily Mail.

‘This election has reminded people that where you live matters — politically, financially and personally, she said.  ‘Florida offers freedom, opportunity, and stability that professionals are craving right now.’

Di Lemme said once they move, the realize the quality of life is better too.

‘Executives can fly to New York for a morning meeting and be home for dinner in Florida,’ she said.

‘Families enjoy A-rated schools, year-round warmth, and communities designed for luxury, wellness, and balance.

‘What was once seasonal is now permanent — professionals are building their lives, careers, and wealth right here.’

As the 2025 Mamdani win reshapes New York’s real estate climate, thousands – possibly millions – of New Yorkers are expected to move for good. ‘For decades, New York defined wealth and ambition,’ said Di Lemme said.

‘Now, West Palm Beach is redefining it.’ Palm Beach County, where West Palm beach is has now become one of the nation’s top financial hubs.

Zohan’s hit on finances

Zohran Mamdani’s economic agenda could leave New Yorkers paying the price.

He’s vowed to freeze rent citywide — a move critics say will crush landlords and stall new development.

His $100 billion housing push would rely on taxpayer funding and likely drown in bureaucracy.

Free city buses may sound good, but the lost revenue would fall straight on taxpayers.

Government-run grocery stores would need heavy subsidies, adding to the city’s costs.

His pledge for free childcare up to age five could drain $8 billion a year from the budget.

He plans to hike the minimum wage to $30 an hour and raise taxes on those earning over $1 million a year.

Critics warn it will trigger layoffs, higher prices — and a wealth exodus that guts New York’s finances.

In late 2024, the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County launched a bold Times Square billboard declaring, ‘Dear NYC, it’s not you, it’s me,’ symbolizing the Wall Street talent and capital flowing south.

More than 480 asset-management firms now operate in Palm Beach County, managing over $36 trillion in global assets. ‘This isn’t a trend — it’s a transformation,’ Di Lemme added.

‘Florida real estate offers financial freedom and a lifestyle people once only dreamed of.’

The suburbs of New York City are also seeing an influx of new residents.

In Westchester, a leafy suburb just north of the Bronx, realtors Zach and Heather Harrison said they are ‘absolutely seeing a correlation between Zohran Mamdani’s surprise win in the Democratic primary and an uptick in real estate interest in Westchester.”

‘Since the summer, nearly every buyer from the city we have taken out to see homes in Westchester has mentioned the mayoral election as one of the drivers for shopping in the suburbs,’ they told Realtor.com.

‘The current environment is giving buyers and investors a reason to reconsider their next real estate move, and turning to Westchester as the main attraction,’ say the Harrisons.

In comparison to New York City, Westchester offers more space, lower crime rates, and often lower effective taxes. A quick train ride to the city and great schools make the area even more appealing.

In Greenwich, CT, realtors say panicked buyers who were bracing for a ‘woke’ wave from City Hall are calling to find them a home there.

Under an an hour’s drive or a half-hour train ride from Manhattan, the wealthy commuter town has become the newest beneficiary of what locals are calling the ‘Mamdani effect’.

Many New Yorkers are choosing to leave the tri-state area altogether and are booking it south to North Carolina and South Carolina, where they will avoid future tax increases and rent freezes Mamdani is proposing.

The Carolinas also offer lower resident income tax and lower property tax, a significant draw for city buyers.

‘New Yorkers are very discouraged by everything that’s going on in the news, but the consensus overall is that Mamdani is not the direction they want the city to go in,’ New York luxury realtor Jay Batra said.

Texas is another popular state New Yorkers are fleeing to due to Mamdani and his win.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott bizarrely threatened to slap New Yorkers with a ‘100% tariff’ if they flee to the Lone Star State because of Mamdani’s win.

Abbott, a key Donald Trump showed no sympathy for anyone trying to escape, saying, ‘After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a[n] 100 percent tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC.’

Mamdani has campaigned on making housing in New York City more affordable for working class communities and immigrants

Mamdani has earned the backing of younger voters through persuasive social media campaigns and in-person visits with New Yorkers across the five boroughs.

He’s stated his support for taxing the ultra-rich, proposing a 2 percent tax hike on New York City residents who earn more than $1 million a year.

The money from the taxes, he says, will fund programs that would make NYC living more affordable for lower-income residents.

He also supports freezing the rent for the roughly 1 million existing rent-stabilized apartments across the city – the mayor of NYC can appoint members to the Rent Guidelines Board, which oversees adjustments for rent-controlled and rent-stabilized apartments.
