Boston Red Sox standout Willson Contreras reportedly invited a fan to a fight after an altercation resulted in his ejection from the game against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
The exchange began when a fan boldly posted on a Red Sox fan Instagram account, calling Contreras names and claiming, “Wilson Contreras is a p—y. And I’m a die-hard Sox fan.” In response, Contreras appeared to challenge the fan in a fiery reply.
“Come meet me at Fenway,” Contreras allegedly wrote in a comment, which has since been removed.
The heated comment emerged on a post that featured a video clip of Contreras being ejected during Boston’s 8-1 defeat on home turf against the Nationals.
The ejection incident unfolded in the fourth inning when Cade Cavalli struck out Contreras and provocatively told the first baseman to “sit down, boy.”
Contreras appeared to ask if Cavalli was talking to him, then walked towards the pitcher as the dugouts and bullpens cleared.
“I don’t know. I’m Venezuelan. I don’t know if it’s racist or not,” Contreras told MassLive after the game. “But I’ll let MLB handle that.”
Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez tried to hold Contreras back but something sparked the Venezuelan to once again sprint toward the group of players, eventually removing his helmet and throwing it toward Cavalli.
Contreras, Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton, interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas were ejected.
Cavalli was not.
Tension between the two players started in the first inning when the two brushed into each other on the way back to thier dugouts.
The ejection marks the second in two nights for Contreras, who was tossed from Monday’s game for tapping his helmet to challenge a call that was not challengeable.
“I feel like everything’s against me right now,” Contreras said. “Got ejected (Monday) night for nothing. I got ejected today even though I was walking back to the dugout. And that’s why I’m not gonna say much — because, like I said, if I say something, they’re gonna use it against me.”
