CHICAGO (WLS) — A 19-year-old woman was killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a North Side park on Sunday afternoon, Chicago police said.
Police said the shooting happened at Pottawattomie Park in the 7300 block of North Rogers Avenue just after 3:30 p.m.
Two men and two women were standing in the park when two people walked in, took out guns and fired shots at the group, police said.
The 19-year-old woman, shot in her chest, was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.
Another woman, 22 years old, was shot in her foot. She was transported to Swedish Hospital in good condition.
A 20-year-old man, shot in his forehead, was transported to Saint Francis Hospital in good condition.
Another man, 19 years old, was shot in his hip. He was taken Saint Francis Hospital in good condition.
Police said one of the victims ran to the nearby fire house before they were taken to a local hospital.
The suspects fled northbound on Winchester Avenue on foot.
Frank Rose, who lived in Rogers Park for 30 years, heard the gunfire while walking in the area.
“We heard seven, eight, nine shots in succession, ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.’ It almost sounded like a nail gun, because people do roofing projects around here, but we’ve heard shots before, so we assumed they were shots. It was a beautiful day out. I’m not surprised there were people here in the park. I’m very surprised that there was someone looking to cause trouble,” Rose said.
No one is in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
