She's fine, everybody's good: Jay Leno says of wife's dementia battle

Jay Leno provided a brief update on his wife Mavis’ recently revealed battle with dementia on Monday from the driver’s seat of one of his vintage cars.

After being spotted out together on Sunday evening, Leno was asked how his wife is doing days after it became public information that he had filed for a conservatorship due to her dementia diagnosis.

‘She’s fine, everybody’s good, we’re doing well,’ Leno, who appeared to be driving several friends around his neighborhood, said.

‘I just set up a will, in case something happens,’ said Leno, attempting to clear up any confusion about why exactly he filed for the conservatorship.

The 73-year-old was sporting a denim button down, a staple in his wardrobe, and flashed a thumbs-up sign to the cameras as he drove away.

The sighting followed a Sunday evening run-in, during which Leno was seen with his wife Mavis attending a comedy show in Hermosa Beach, California – the first sighting of the two since news broke the former late night host had filed for conservatorship.

The couple were seen arriving to The Comedy and Magic Club on Sunday, where Leno was set to perform that evening.

Leno reached for his wife’s hand after they emerged from their car and headed inside the club.

She kept warm in a pink vest worn over a floral top and black trousers. Leno opted for a black suit teamed with a blue button down shirt.

The couple appeared to be doing well following the conservatorship news – Leno gave a friendly wave at one point during the outing while Mavis looked in good spirits as she returned to their car, chatting with a pal.

On Friday, Leno filed for conservatorship over his wife Mavis, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, according to documents.

The filing claims Mavis ‘lacks the necessary capacity to execute the estate plan’ due to her ‘major neurocognitive disorders (including dementia)’.

He described having a ‘loving marriage for more than 43 years’ with his wife noting he ‘has always handled the couple’s finances,’ and wanted to ensure she ‘has managed assets sufficient to provide for her care should Jay predecease Mavis’.

It is unclear when Mavis, whom he married in 1980, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, however Leno began the process for conservatorship in November.

Conservatorship is a legal status where a court appoints a person to manage a minor’s or incapacitated person’s personal and financial affairs.

‘The conservatorship estate will not be funded with any assets and is being established for the sole purpose of filing a petition for substituted judgment to ensure Mavis’s estate plan is established and that Mavis’s future care is provided for under the terms of a living trust,’ the documents, seen by Fox News state.

‘Jay is fully capable of continuing his support for Mavis’s physical and financial needs as he has throughout their marriage.

‘Jay desires to execute an estate plan, including a revocable trust and will, which will provide for Mavis and Mavis’s brother and her sole living heir aside from Jay.’

The order also states Mavis ‘consents to the conservatorship of the estate’ as well as ‘Jay’s appointment as her conservator, and that she would not prefer anyone else to be appointed in Jay’s stead.’

During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jay said that people should ‘marry the person you wish you could be’ and that he ‘married the perfect person.’

The comedian and former TV show host was seen in December driving around in his Tesla Cybertruck, the newest edition to his extensive automobile collection, in Los Angeles.

That outing came 11 months after he broke his collarbone in a motorcycle crash – an incident that itself occurred two months after he was burned up in an engine fire.

On November 12, 2022, Leno and his friend Dave Killackey were working on one of his vintage cars at his LA mansion when his 1907 White Steam Car erupted into flames and blew up in his face.

Leno’s face then caught on fire as Killackey said: ‘I could not see his face, it was a wall of fire.’

After keeping Leno’s entire body from being engulfed in flames, Killackey then put out the car fire.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Jay said that he drove to the hospital after the shock incident and then decided to go home ‘to let his wife know.
