On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s attempt to secure an $8.2 million defamation payout related to a Democratic ad run during his failed 2017 Senate attempt.
Moore, now 79, petitioned the justices to halt a decision made in April by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. This ruling overturned a 2022 federal jury verdict against the Senate Majority PAC, which is linked to the Democrats.
Justice Clarence Thomas rejected Moore’s urgent request without offering any rationale, which is a standard procedure in similar situations.
Moore, recognized for his staunch opposition to same-sex marriage and advocacy for displaying the Ten Commandments on federal land, had been the GOP candidate in a special election intended to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Sessions. Sessions had stepped down to assume the role of President Trump’s first attorney general.
Even with President Trump’s endorsement in a state he won by 28 points, Moore narrowly lost to Democrat Doug Jones. The defeat came after allegations from three women accusing Moore of sexual assault, with two claiming they were minors at the time of the incidents.
