Why Yankees PA announcer is missing first home game in 16 years

The Yankees games will sound a little different this weekend.

Paul Olden will not be at the weekend series against the Cubs, breaking his streak of calling 1,339 consecutive games for the Yankees since 2009 when the new stadium opened.

He said on Instagram he’s missing the game for his grand-nephew’s wedding.

Olden shared on Friday that his streak ended two years ago and that he will be absent for his grand nephew’s wedding in southern California, ending his impressive run as the Yankees’ P.A. announcer.

“A new announcing streak starts in two weeks.”

His streak spanned 16 years, covering all regular season and postseason games, with the exception of the 2020 playoffs due to the COVID-19 shortened season held in San Diego.

With Olden not handling his normal duties, Mark Fratto will instead be the one announcing the names.

Yankee Stadium frequenters may already know him since he serves as the announcer for NYFC of the MLS, who play most of their games in The Bronx.

He has also worked at Madison Square Garden since 2008 for college basketball and boxing events.

Fratto’s other duties include serving as the PA announcer for the Wizards and Commanders, along with working for Golden Boy Boxing.

He called it an “absolute honor” to be behind the mic at Yankee Stadium.

“Well friends, still in disbelief but we’re going to The Show with the Yankees this weekend‼️,” Fratto wrote in an Instagram post Thursday. “A lot of you know we’re four generations deep here — the Yankees are the team of my Grandfathers, my Father, my brothers and my sons.

“Like many 80s kids, I grew up announcing myself in the backyard by imitating the legendary Bob Sheppard. This is a dream come true 30 years into this Announcer Journey.

“Absolutely wild. Cue Frank Sinatra. Let’s go.

He will be calling the Yankees’ final series of the first half when they welcome the NL Central-leading Cubs for three games.

The Yankees are on a four-game win streak after sweeping the Mariners in a crazy game Thursday night, rallying from a 5-0 no-hit attempt in the eighth to grab a 6-5 walk-off win in 10 innings.

Freshly named All-star Carlos Rodon gets the ball Friday night against ex-Met Chris Flexen, while Max Fried and Will Warren get the nod in the final two games, respectively.

The Yankees (52-41) enter the series two games back of the Blue Jays in the AL East, while they are 2 1/2 games of the Rays for the first wild card spot.
