In the heart of San Diego, all eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 remained shut down Tuesday morning following a tragic sequence of accidents the previous night that claimed the lives of a La Mesa police officer and another motorist.

The incident unfolded shortly before 10:30 p.m. when a vehicle collided with another, causing it to overturn in the eastbound lanes near Fairmount Avenue. Subsequently, a third vehicle crashed into the overturned car.
