Tragedy struck in Thailand on Wednesday when a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train, resulting in at least 22 fatalities and injuring 64 others, according to local officials.
The incident occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province as the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani. The crane’s impact caused the train to derail and subsequently catch fire, the province’s Public Relations Department reported.
Officials have confirmed that the fire is now under control. Rescue operations are actively underway as authorities search for individuals who may still be trapped within the wreckage.

The unfortunate event unfolded on January 14 in Nakhon Ratchasima province, as detailed by the State Railway of Thailand.
Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan revealed that the train was carrying nearly 200 passengers at the time of the accident. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crane’s collapse.

“Nineteen bodies have been recovered, but there are still some inside the train carriages that cannot be removed yet because the crane started shifting, so the team pulled back for fear of danger,” said Police Col. Thatchapon Chinnawong, according to Reuters.
Chinnawong added that those who were killed were in two of the three carriages struck by the crane.
