Morning commuters on the 405 Freeway were met with a startling scene Tuesday after a trash truck caught fire and spilled a large mound of burning garbage onto the roadway.
The fire was reported at about 6:00 a.m. on the connector ramp from the southbound 405 Freeway to the southbound 110 Freeway in Gardena.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle, described as a red storage truck, became engulfed in flames, forcing the driver to unload the smoldering debris onto the right shoulder.
Firefighters quickly responded to the freeway fire, where heavy smoke could be seen rising above the interchange, KTLA reported.

Officials closed the southbound 405-to-southbound 110 transition ramp while crews worked to extinguish the blaze and clear the scene, but the other ramps at the busy freeway interchange remained open.
