In a heartfelt message on Truth Social, President Trump heaped praise on Harry Kane after the England captain led his team to a memorable 3-2 triumph over Mexico in the World Cup.
“Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!” President Trump declared just hours after the Bayern Munich striker spearheaded England’s victory at Mexico City’s renowned Azteca Stadium.
With this win, England secured their advance to the World Cup quarterfinals, overcoming one of the tournament’s co-hosts, despite facing the challenge of being a player short.
Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid sensation, scored twice, and Harry Kane converted a penalty, paving England’s way to Miami, where they are set to face Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
However, England’s victory was anything but guaranteed, as Mexico had not succumbed to defeat in a competitive match at the legendary Azteca Stadium since 2013.
Bellingham’s quick-fire double was cut in half by tricky winger Julián Quiñones just before half time. Minutes into the second half, England right back Jarell Quansah was given a red card.
Kane restored England’s two goal advantage when he scored a penalty that was won by recent Barcelona signing Anthony Gordon.
Gordon was through on goal when he was brought down by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel.
But Mexico showed no signs of caving – and reduced England’s deficit again when Raul Jimenez converted a penalty that was conceded by Kane.
Mexico continued to pile forward and England’s coach Thomas Tuchel – who won the Champions League with Chelsea – responded by substituting Newcastle United defender Dan Burn, who stands at six-feet seven-inches, onto the field.
England will face off against Norway Saturday as the team chases its first World Cup since 1966.
Norway, meanwhile, defeated Brazil 2-1 at MetLife Stadium – with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland bagging two goals.
