Donald Trump is contemplating an arrangement that might allow Iran to restart uranium enrichment in ten years. This consideration comes even as he vocally expressed his frustration with top military officials after Iran shot down two American pilots.
According to reports from the New York Times, the proposed plan would have Iran halt uranium enrichment for a decade. After this period, they could begin producing a limited quantity of low-enriched uranium for another ten years.
Initially, Trump advocated for a 20-year halt, concerned that a shorter suspension might too closely resemble the 2015 nuclear deal he decided to abandon.
Under the nuclear agreement signed during Barack Obama’s administration, Iran was restricted from enriching uranium beyond civilian levels for 15 years.
However, in light of recent tensions and a heated exchange with his military advisors, Trump seems to be reconsidering his stance, potentially showing more flexibility in pursuit of concluding the ongoing conflict.

Following the news, images of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis loomed heavily in Trump’s mind, according to the report.Â
Trump reportedly demanded that the military retrieve the pilots immediately, but US troops hadn’t been on the ground in Iran since the government overthrow that led to the hostage crisis.Â
Aides updated Trump at meaningful moments, a senior administration official told the outlet.
While one pilot was rescued seven hours later, the other remained missing until late Saturday evening, when he was finally saved in a high-stakes extraction.
It wasn’t until after 2am that Trump went to bed.Â
