() A House task force on government transparency will hold a hearing on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) next week.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET and will be streamed live online at newsnationnow.com and in the app (click here to download). You can also watch the hearing live with commentary from Reality Check host Ross Coulthart, who will take viewer questions live on ‘s YouTube channel.

“The American people deserve maximum transparency from the federal government on sightings, acquisitions, and examinations of UAPs and whether they pose a potential threat to Americans’ safety,” said chairwoman Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla.

Questions over what the government knows

The hearing is a continuation of bipartisan efforts to force more transparency on the issue, which has captured the attention of both lawmakers and the public since whistleblower David Grusch came forward and alleged the Pentagon has been operating a secret UFO-retrieval program.

Grusch’s claims have been supported by others in government who say the Defense Department is not being forthcoming when it comes to UAP sightings and investigations.

Some have even suggested the DoD is in possession of technology and biological material of non-human origin.

The Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, charged with investigating UAP sightings, has denied that any such programs exist and said there is no evidence that UAPs are of extraterrestrial origin.

AARO did acknowledge that a small number of UAP sightings remained unexplained and merit more investigation.

Transparency push from both parties

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pushed the agency to be more transparent in both open and closed-door hearings, raising concerns that the department is taking actions to evade Congressional oversight.

The hearing will focus on Pentagon disclosure and AARO’s effectiveness. Witnesses include Air Force veterans Jeffrey Nuccetelli and Dylan Borland, Navy veteran Alexandro Wiggins and journalist George Knapp.
