In upstate New York, a collision with a pickup truck sent eight Amish individuals airborne from their horse-drawn buggy, authorities reported.

A child aged 6 was taken to the hospital, and a horse lost its life after 73-year-old Laurie Callan’s 2012 Dodge rear-ended the buggy on Route 5 in Danube, shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the New York State Police.

As the result of the crash, the two-horse buggy veered off the road in Herkimer County, ejecting all the passengers, while Callan’s truck overturned, coming to rest in the westbound lane.

The young boy was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, about 30 miles west, with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

The elderly motorist was also treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

The horse that died was removed from the scene by its owner, according to police.

Callan was ticketed for following too closely, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision with a horse on a highway, and unreasonable speed.

The investigation into the mishap is ongoing.
