In the Chicago area, a series of community meetings were slated for Sunday in response to the recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela, which led to the capture of the country’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, and his spouse.

On Saturday, downtown Chicago became a hub for protesters shortly after President Donald Trump revealed the specifics of the military operation. The demonstrators voiced strong opposition to his decision to execute the strike.

Federal Plaza, located in the Loop, was bustling with individuals expressing their dissent against the Trump administration’s move. Participants labeled the military intervention as an unwarranted act of aggression.

While some Venezuelan expatriates welcomed the overthrow of the regime, concerns were raised about the lack of congressional consultation prior to the military action.

Some demonstrators want the Trump administration to be focused on issues unfolding in the United States. Others ABC7 spoke with say this attack on Venezuela reminds them of previous U.S. involvement in international conflict.

Trump says the U.S. is going to run Venezuela in the interim until a transition can happen.

Maduro is currently being held in a Brooklyn, New York, detention center and faces drug and weapons charges. Venezuela’s vice president, meanwhile, addressed the country on state television after the attack, calling for Maduro’s release.

Sunday afternoon’s community meetings are expected to take place in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood and in north suburban Schaumburg.
