Jacksonville police have apprehended Brittany McLean in connection with the murder of 41-year-old Yolanda Haynes, who tragically lost her life on July 23.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities have made an arrest in the fatal stabbing of a woman at a convenience store on Kings Road.
On Friday, July 24, just a day after 41-year-old Yolanda Haynes was killed, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office took 36-year-old Brittany McLean into custody and charged her with murder.
The incident occurred shortly after noon on Thursday, July 23, when police responded to reports of a stabbing outside Leyu Food Store on Kings Road.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Haynes suffering from a chest stab wound. Despite being swiftly transported to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
At the time, police said they learned that Haynes was stabbed during a fight with another woman. According to the arrest report, she came up to the business already injured, and someone called for help.
Several people on the scene reportedly escorted McLean to a patrol car and told police she was the suspect.
“Officers quickly identified Brittany McLean as Haynes’ attacker and took her into custody on charges of Aggravated Battery and Tampering with Evidence,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a social media post. “Our Homicide Unit detectives took over the investigation and, using McLean’s statement, witness statements, and physical evidence developed probable cause to arrest McLean for Haynes’ murder.”
Witnesses told police the two were fighting over a loan of $10.
McLean is being held in the Duval County jail without bond. According to her inmate sheet, her next court date is set for Aug. 17.
“Our hearts are with Yolanda Haynes’ loved ones as they grieve her tragic loss, and we will continue to seek justice for her,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
