A woman has been left stunned after discovering a retro Burger King receipt from the 1980s which reveals the staggering price increases that the fast food chain has implemented over the past four decades.

US-based Liza took to social media to share the receipt after her mother found it in a box in the garage while remodeling her home.

The faded paper from the fast food chain dates back to August 10, 1986, and lists three Whopper burgers purchased for $4.62 – which works out at $1.54 each.

A single Whopper burger currently costs $6.79 in today’s money – over four times the price listed on the vintage receipt.

The receipt showed that Liza’s mom spent less than $8.39 to feed a family of three in the 1980s.

She purchased the three Whoppers alongside two portions of fries for $1.58 – making them just $0.79 per portion.

For drinks, the customer also bought two large vanilla milkshakes for a combined $1.78 – meaning she spent just $0.89 per large beverage.

The seven-item order set her back a grand total of $8.39 – including tax.

She paid with a $20 bill and was given $11.61 back in change.

Liza, who ‘wasn’t even born yet,’ said: ‘I am amazed at the price of things. When a family of three could eat fast food for less than $9.’

And she wasn’t the only person left stunned by the cheap prices as other fast-food fans flooded to the comments to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: ‘Now it’s $23 for two whopper meals.’

Another commented: ‘This is making me emotional.’

‘Now my son and I will spend at least $20 on just fast food for one night,’ a third said.

Someone else simply wrote: ‘I’m weeping.’

Customers are not the only ones feeling the impact of the economic strain -with Burger King set to close up to 400 locations in the USA by the end of 2023.

The UK-based arm of the chain previously started offering a ‘happy hour’ between 2pm and 5pm every day in a bid to entice more diners.
