Yankees' Eric Reyzelman in stable condition after allergic reaction in first big league camp

Yankees upcoming reliever Eric Reyzelman encountered a setback during his initial stint in the major league camp in Tampa. He had to be rushed to the hospital on Wednesday due to an allergic reaction.

Reyzelman was in stable condition after experiencing the episode Wednesday morning before the Yankees’ first workout of pitchers and catchers, a team spokesman said.

The 23-year-old was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation.

The Yankees said they planned to provide another update on the right-hander Thursday.

Reyzelman, a non-roster invite, spent the 2024 season mostly at Double-A, where he posted a 1.93 ERA with 37 strikeouts across 23 ¹/₃ innings.

Carlos Rodón, Scott Effross, Will Warren and JT Brubaker all threw live batting practice Wednesday afternoon against Yankees catchers Austin Wells, Ben Rice, Alex Jackson and Jesus Rodriguez.

Rodón threw the equivalent of two innings while Effross, Warren and Brubaker each threw one apiece.

“I feel like [Rodón] is in a really good spot again, similar to last year,” manager Aaron Boone said. “But just another year more comfortable with us, with the people in the building, who everyone is, who he goes to for different things. Those are all little things that over time really help guys.”

Effross, who was not sharp in three appearances late last season after returning from Tommy John and back surgeries, could be a potential wild card for the Yankees bullpen if he is able to return to the pitcher he was pre-surgery.

“I think Effross looks really good,” Boone said. “Kind of that next stage away from surgery. … There looks to be a crispness to his pitches, which is encouraging, because obviously he can play a big role for us. We know how good he was when we acquired him. Excited with where he’s at.”

Rice is among the catchers vying to be Wells’ backup, but Boone plans to keep getting Rice action at first base as well to maintain his versatility.

“I want to keep that first-base flexibility with him because I do really believe in the bat,” Boone said.

As a former union rep and teammate of Juan Soto, Gerrit Cole was happy to see the superstar land a record $765 million contract this offseason — even if it wasn’t with the Yankees.

“It’s large,” Cole said with a laugh. “It’s a very large amount of money.

“But it’s hard to underestimate great players and hard to underestimate Scott [Boras], too,” said Cole, a fellow Boras client. “He does a good job at what he does. It’s a large number. It’s a historic contract. It’s good for all players, it’s good for the game.”
