BOSTON — In a twist of fate, former Yankees had opposing roles on this dramatic night.
While Aroldis Chapman may demand an apology from his old team, perhaps it should be directed toward Sonny Gray. Chapman derailed Gray’s stellar performance, where he was on track to complete a no-hitter with 7 ⅓ innings—ultimately allowing the Yankees to level the score in the ninth.
Nevertheless, this proved to be merely a prelude to further heartbreak for the Yankees.
The Yankees briefly snagged a two-run advantage in the 10th, only for the Red Sox to mount a comeback in their half of the inning. Fernando Cruz bore the brunt of the Boston offense as Jarren Duran’s walk-off single handed the Red Sox a 5-4 victory, sealing a four-game sweep on Sunday night at Fenway Park.
Despite rallying late in the ninth to overcome a 2-0 gap against Chapman, the Yankees found themselves ahead in the 10th, only to watch their efforts unravel.
Amed Rosario, who had broken up Gray’s no-hit bid in the eighth inning, led off with a sinking liner to right field that Wilyer Abreu dropped, allowing automatic runner Max Schuemann to score the go-ahead run from second.
Abreu’s throw home was wild, giving Rosario an extra 90 feet to second base.
After Oswaldo Cabrera sacrifice bunted Rosario to third, Austin Wells got off a swinging bunt down the third base line that Rosario raced home on to beat the throw for the 4-2 lead.
